As long ago as I can remember I have always been fascinated by the naturalworld. That childish fascination has not left me but deepened over the years.This interest has led me to my love of biology, ecology, animal behavior andevolution.

Following my graduation from High School I studied Biological Sciences fortwo years at the Catholic University of Chile in Santiago. From March 2003 toNovember 2004 I was obliged to take a break from my studies at university as myfather was moving from the city to a more remote rural area. While helping myfather I was able to work closely with birds of prey among others and I wassuccessful in breeding the endangered chinchillas. During my time away fromuniversity I continued to deepen my knowledge of my subject and studiedevolutionary thinking and the biological basis of behavior. I also worked for abrief time as a translator which made me think that perhaps my English was goodenough o complete my studies in an English speaking country.

Since coming to Oxford and studying at OLT I have improved my writtenEnglish a great deal. I am a member of The Natural History Museum (London) andrecently attended a course called "The History of Evolution." The course wasorganized by Birkbeck Collegeand took place at the Natural History Museum inLondon each Wednesday. The course has been fascinating and has served to confirmmy suspicion that the more I learn of this subject the more I want to know.

I am hopeful that my previous studies in Santiago, my maturity and myexperience in this field will allow me to enter the second year of anundergraduate programme in the UK. After completing my undergraduate it is mywish to continue studying at postgraduate level and ultimately conduct my ownresearch in this area.

My other academic interests include Paleoanthropology, and the history anddevelopment of science. I am most interested in the writings of Darwin andThomas and Henry Huxley.

I am keen on fitness training, horse riding, trekking and diving. I am mostinterested in all outdoor pursuits. I am also keen to develop my newly foundskills in classical singing and dance.

I realize that as a non-native student I will be required to work harderthan my contemporaries and I am prepared to do that. I have a cheerful andopen-minded disposition and look forward to sharing and exploring new ideas.

I wish to study Biology because of my enthusiasm for the environment and myfascination with how living organisms work, particularly animals. I enjoystudying creatures at a cellular level as well as on a large scale, such astheir ecosystem. It is this variation of perspective that makes Biology anappealing subject to further my knowledge at University.

I recently attended lectures on biodiversity and conservation at theUniversity Museum of Natural History in Oxford. This aided my understanding ofdifferent topics, including why our rainforests are so important and the role ofspecific invertebrates in our global environment.

I currently own a shared website on which my AS Biology notes can beviewed. This was set up in order to improve my skills in computer and datahandling, as well as share information with other students who are studyingBiology at A-level. I am hoping it will also make the subject more interactiveand exciting for people who visit the site.

I keep up to date with new developments and ideas by reading around myschool subjects in books and in journals such as New Scientist. Leisureactivities, including visits to Cotswold Wildlife Park, the Natural HistoryMuseum and the Body World Exhibition, have proved valuable in expanding mybiological knowledge, as has watching wildlife documentaries on television.

I have a part time job at Summertown Library, which has been an importantexperience for me. It has not only made me more independent, but has taught methe importance of decision-making, how to work as a team and how to handleresponsibility. I take pleasure in reading novels, spending time with friends,drawing, painting and walking in the countryside.
